June 24, 1973: FROM THE FIRST NEWSLETTER

WHO ARE WE?

The Valley Outdoor Association was formed only a month ago in May 1973 in the hope of bringing together a loosely knit group of people who wish to share their times and experiences in the active participation and enjoyment of the outdoors.

A number of participants in a backpacking program sponsored by the Surrey Parks and Recreation Department were contacted to determine the level of interest in the formation of an outdoor club or association accessible to residents of the Surrey, New Westminster, Coquitlam area. Approximately 18 interested persons attended this first meeting held at Shannon Community School.

At the second general meeting, a week later, a commitment was made by those attending to form an outdoor association with a basis of summer activities. At the end of the summer an evaluation of these activities will determine whether a permanent association is established.
